Shopify's standard 3D viewer renders gemstones black. GemViewer ray-traces them in the browser, and lets shoppers swap gems and metals.

The situation
Jewelry brands export 3D models from their design software, and Shopify's built-in viewer shows the stones as black holes. Merchants either hid the 3D or lived with it.
What we built
- A real-time ray tracer that follows light through the facets of each stone, running in the shopper's browser
- Automatic stone detection from an unmodified design export, so merchants upload the file they already have
- Material swapping at runtime: change the gem, the metal or the finish without a new file
- A merchant dashboard, billing and a public Shopify app listing around the viewer
The result
- Approved by Shopify's app review and live on the App Store
- AR ring try-on is in development on the same engine
